(56,848 posts)39. Stannis Baratheon held that castle in the books
while I don't believe he 100% abandoned it in the books, he basically went "all in" when he sailed North to assist the Night's Watch at the Wall. All of his soldiers, his family and all the supporting crew went along with him. I think in the books they knew about the Dragonglass there and he did have people digging for it, but it was only a skeleton crew of people.
