Most sitcoms have at least one character whose "humor" is based entirely on insulting other characters (Chandler from Friends is perhaps the most obvious example).

When the laugh track is removed, the viewer is left with the feeling that this unfunny, sarcastic asshole is trying to get punched in the mouth.
