The whole "We want our country back!" meme is racist. The tea party had a lot of that rhetoric in their mix and the GOP-proper knows how to use that dog whistle.

They go right up to the line of saying "Vote white" without actually saying it so they can maintain plausible deniability.

That's where the "socialist" angle comes it. It's a piece of that whole fear-mongering routine.
