3. Hurricane Ike and Bolivar -

When Hurricane Ike hit Galveston area (and nearby Bolivar Peninsula where workers live) we had a repeat of Katrina, but much less media involvement.

Here in Houston we saw the National Guard roll in, and we heard the requests for evacuation. I am in the furthest evacuation zone from the water and I got the heck out. But I had the resources to drive to another city and kennel my pets when I got there. Others are not in that position. Press reports that people "refused to leave". Well, it's hard for them to leave if they don't have money, credit cards, a well-running vehicle, somewhere to keep their pets.

Hundreds of people remain missing three weeks after Ike's assault on Texas. Local and city officials are no longer keeping their own count of missing residents, and the estimate varies wildly from one agency to another.

^ and that is likely an understatement given the secrecy around the shut-down of Galveston/Boliver the week before Ike hit. Press were not allowed in.

Here's the "official" story -- http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/nation/2008-10-04-ike-saturday_N.htm
