It's become trendy to crap on Cobain and Nirvana but I think you are absolutely correct. The era prior to Nirvana's break out was dominated by synthesized music and hair bands. "Teen Spirt" and the album "Nevermind" were groundbreaking for most of America. I know they certainly had that impact on my teen years. It's true they weren't the first band out of Seattle to play what they did, but they certainly opened the door to a ton of bands that were focused on a return to a more authentic rock sound. I would also add that Cobain is a underrated guitarist as well. Most people hear the power cords and think it's simple but he's doing a lot more than just power chords if you actually break down the sound of that opening. Some of it is attributed to his non traditional style but it's not easy to accurately replicate the real sound on the album.
