one of the 1000 dollar plus people explained the high cost to me this way:
I hate to be the bearer of bad news but, there just isnt any inexpensive way to recover the data in cases like this. If the drive fell off of the table and it is clicking, there is a very high probability that the read/write heads are damaged. (there is a chance that the problem is something else, unlikely but if so, the cost would be substantially lower).
If the read/write heads are damaged, then unfortunately, you would be looking at a recovery cost of between $900 - $1600. The reason for the high cost is; the read/write heads will need to be removed in our clean-room and a new head stack installed and calibrated. It is not a particularly difficult task just very exact and tedious, but in many cases, we will go through multiple head stacks due to the damage created when the drive fell. If you decide that you want us to attempt a recovery, we will be glad to examine the drive and give you an exact cost.
I gave up on it then to rest my weary head and just go out and shoot new ones

I went out, took some photos downtown, came home, drank half a beer and watched the Belmont.

My late brother in law raised Jennys. He had some Jacks, but they are not that nice.
