Complying with the rules is something everyone participating should do.
As host, I would ask people to resize or do it for them if they needed me to. No biggie.
When I go over file size, and I sometimes do, I always ask the host if it's OK. I've been told "No" before, and I complied.

A lot of the distress about longest side is due to the Standard/Classic account setting

If your image is in portrait mode, it will mean scrolling, even at the old standards.
