Studios own many properties around Los Angeles where they can shoot their scenes without having to pay to property owners. If you look carefully especially with cop shows you can see the same buildings used. A perfect example is the old Union Oil Building is Los Angeles. Now it houses the Los Angels Center Studios. The building was used in numerous shows and movies. From Hospital to FBI Headquarters. The lobby and parking served as numerous hotel lobbies and office scenes. Once the shot is taken, the recorded files are brought upstairs for processing and editing.

It's not just properties but also includes company names and telephone numbers. Imagine a scene when a police inspector finds out the address and telephone number of a suspect and informs his partner. That telephone number and address does not exist in real life. The script writer cannot simply add a random telephone number and address. It has to be from a list of approved numbers and addresses. This limits any lawsuits.

Company names are also treated the same way. That's why you will hear the same company names used. If it's a Casino, it's the Tangiers. If it's an airline it's Oceanic.

It's a fascinating industry.
