Ex-Arkansas sheriff seeks end to registering as sex offender [View all]

LITTLE ROCK—A former county sheriff convicted of a civil rights violation while he was in office wants an end to a requirement that he register as a sex offender.

Former Independence County Sheriff Ron Webb of Newark was convicted in 1999 on a misdemeanor count of violating a woman's civil rights by sexually assaulting her. He was sentenced to a year in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.

The county also paid $75,000 to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by the woman.

Webb's motion in federal court to end the reporting was rejected with a suggestion that he apply to state court in the county where he lives. Webb told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that will be his next step.
