Whooping cough cases surge to 15-year high in Arkansas [View all]

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Health officials announced that Arkansas is seeing its highest number of whooping cough cases in 15 years, with more than 500 infections reported statewide in 2025.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a bacterial infection that affects the lungs and airways, spreading through coughing and sneezing during close contact, officials said.

Early symptoms often resemble a common cold, followed weeks later by severe coughing fits that can last for months.

According to a spokesperson, cases have been confirmed in more than 50 counties, marking a sharp rise both in Arkansas and across the country.
