5. California is a great place to do a lot of things

and there is a culture of innovation here that is unmatched anywhere else in the world. But it isn't a great place to do anything industrial out of anything other than sheer necessity.

The most "business friendly" policy in California is that non-compete agreements are unenforceable. A company like Intel couldn't have been started anywhere else because the founders would have been sued into bankruptcy by their former employers anywhere else.

But the problem as I see it is the fields in which California is thriving today just aren't going to have the same uplifting effect the say the aerospace industry did post-war. The barriers to entry are just too high, that isn't really anyone's fault but celebrating Apple, Google and Uber and then saying everything is just great is sort of disingenuous.
