The article makes it sound like this is the first time the current owner became aware of the controversy, but he was quoted in a different article (from 2017) acknowledging the complaints in a 2014 interview:

"We do get the occasional complaint. They want us to know the controversy of the name. And yet for every complaint, there are about 1,000 people who say, ‘Wow, I can't believe it’s still here’ — or ‘Open another one in our town.’"

So yeah...zero chance he didn't know about it before.
