my sister had all these tricks for staying cool without the a/c, and since at the time i was living on her generosity i had to respect that. you could open the windows in the early morning and by 9 or ten, close them up and lower the shades. the best thing though was the cold showers. i'd step out of the cold shower directly into my bathing suit. no toweling off. they also had misters on the patio and the jacuzzi was unheated. when i had to run to the store was the worst - i put a thermometer inside my car and it broke. it had to be at least 130 inside that car after several minutes in the parking lot. i could barely touch the gear shift it was so hot.
