Intense thunderstorms unleash microbursts, toppling trees around D.C. area, [View all]

Tenleytown in northwest Washington and Herndon, Va. appeared to be hardest hit.

'An intense complex of thunderstorms raced through the Washington region between 3 and 5 a.m. Wednesday, unleashing localized pockets of damaging winds and a bit of small hail.

High winds downed trees and even some powerlines in several locations in northern Virginia, the District, and Maryland, but the most concentrated damage focused in Tenleytown and American University Park area of northwest Washington. A neighborhood in Herndon was also particularly hard hit.

Some of the trees damaged homes and crushed cars.'>>>
