D.C. mayoral candidate Carol Schwartz lays claim to ‘education mayor’ in policy paper. [View all]

Carol Schwartz, a former D.C. Council member who is seeking a political comeback in November’s mayoral race, released her campaign platform Friday on one of the city’s most vexing issues: education.

The 15-page white paper offered a more substantive road map for how Schwartz would approach problems with teacher retention, a school boundary overhaul and standardized testing than those enumerated to date by Democratic nominee Muriel E. Bowser (D-Ward 4).

The paper, however, appeared geared as much or more at undermining the claim of rival Independent candidate, David A. Catania’s (I-At large) as the race’s education candidate. In a sometimes personal account, including how the special education needs of her brother pushed her to get a degree in education, Schwartz took occasional digs at policies espoused by Catania.
