While protests continue, Tampa's Trump supporters take the day to celebrate on the bay [View all]

Organizers say about 300 people showed up to participate in the event marking the president’s birthday.

The Tampa Bay Times is aboard the lead vessel in today’s “Trump Flotilla,” which started at 11 a.m. near Beer Can Island off Apollo Beach.

The boat parade is one of several “Trumptillas” taking place today around Florida as a way for voters to show their support for President Donald Trump while practicing social distancing to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

Parades are planned in Pensacola, Miami, Jacksonville and other cities along the Intracoastal Waterway, the inshore boat path that wraps around the Florida peninsula and Panhandle.

Sherri Gerland of Apollo Beach organized the Tampa procession, which was expected to make its way south around MacDill Air Force Base to American Legion Post 138, Gerland said. The parade is scheduled to break up around 2 p.m.

Starting the "Trumptilla" off Beer Can Island to celebrate Trump's birthday seems somewhat appropriate.
