1. I don't understand the "October surprise" part of this

I have frequently heard about this as an "October surprise". Considering that the people saying this are usually from the left, I assume the idea is that this would hurt Obama. I don't follow that.

If Israel takes unilateral action, that may serve to focus the election debate on foreign policy, but I don't see how this works against Obama. Obama will have to play the hawk, but he has done that all along.

If there is some kind of a joint operation between Israel and the US, this could only happen with Obama's agreement, and Obama could sell that as necessary for the security of the US. Liberals might be unhappy with that, but that would BOOST Obama's numbers in the near term. If the operation lingered on or threatened to turn into a bigger war, that could certainly work against Obama, but that would be long after the election.

So somebody, please explain to me how this could work in Romney's favor.
