I didn't know him, but knew of him through an acquaintance. My impression is that he was a real muckraker (of the kind we need more of these days), a force of nature, and a great guy besides.

I understand as well that he smoked heavily. So many good lives lost to that (both my grandfathers, among them), not to mention the loved ones they leave behind.
