Laurel special mayor election set for Sept. 3 after resignation [View all]

Billings, Mont. — Yellowstone County election officials tentatively set September 3 for a special mail-in-only election to choose Laurel’s next mayor after Dave Waggoner announced his resignation earlier this week.

In a letter to the community, Waggoner said his decision was based only on "Ongoing health challenges."

The letter also said the move was not tied to political pressure or the effort by Laurel residents to recall him.

Under state law, petitioners had three months to gather signatures from 20 percent of Laurel’s registered voters to force a recall election. In Laurel, that number was 840.
