Sen. Tony Avella Quits Democratic Conference For IDC; Dems Say It Hurts Progressive Causes

Surprised at losing Sen. Tony Avella to the Independent Democratic Conference, mainstream Senate Dems Wednesday morning called it a blow for progressive causes.

"It's unfortunate that progressive policies continue to be stymied because of divisions created by Senators who choose to empower Republicans," said Senate Democrat spokesman Mike Murphy.

Avella hadn't given the Senate Dems a heads up before going public in today's Daily News.

His departure particularly stings given that he is from Queens, the home county of Senate Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris, who had offered Avella lots of electoral help in the past.
