NY Attorney General Eric Schneiderman settles with Bed Bath & Beyond over hiring practices [View all]

Their hiring restrictions went beyond the scope of the law.

State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman on Tuesday announced a settlement with Bed Bath & Beyond after the home goods purveyor told applicants at a job fair the company wouldn't hire anyone with a past felony conviction.

"The law in our state prohibits the automatic disqualification of job candidates with criminal backgrounds," Schneiderman said in a statement. "This agreement puts employers on notice that slamming the door on job seekers based on past conduct without deciding whether that conduct is relevant to the current job is not only wrong – it’s unlawful.”
