House eyes wider gun freedoms.Allows concealed weapons in restaurants and bars [View all]
RALEIGH Guns would be allowed in restaurants and bars and on college campuses under a bill the state House was preparing to debate Monday night.
The bill expands the public places where people who have permits to carry concealed weapons can bring their handguns to cafeterias, grills and snack bars. Bars, restaurants, and other establishments would be able to prohibit guns by posting signs. A bill allowing handguns in restaurants passed the House last year but stalled in the Senate.
There are more than 300,000 concealed-carry permits in the state.
UNC System President Tom Ross, along with UNC-Chapel Hill faculty and police chiefs at university campuses oppose the part of the bill that would allow concealed handguns on campuses when they are locked in vehicles. The university administrators argued that vehicle break-ins are among the most common campus crimes, and allowing guns on campus would risk public safety.
