** Free voter IDs available in NC beginning this month ** [View all]

Posted by Lynn Bonner on January 3, 2014

The state begins issuing no-cost voter identification cards this month to voters who don’t have another form of photo identification acceptable under a new elections law.

Beginning in 2016, state voters must have photo identification to cast ballots. Free IDs are available to people who do not have documents such as drivers licenses, passports, or military ID cards. State DMV offices have applications for ID cards that will be issued at no cost.

To get an ID, applicants must present two documents that verify their age and identity, must provide a valid Social Security number, and must be registered voters. Cards will be mailed to applicants within 10-15 days.

The new law, which makes sweeping changes to state elections, faces legal challenges from the U.S. Justice Department, the state NAACP, a voters’ rights organization, and others.
