Although I did receive an automated call from them yesterday, informing me they received my application and they would try and contact me within the next 3 days to let me know if they will be able to get me coverage by Jan 1st. If I don't hear from them, I will not have my application processed until a later date.

It sounds like the best course of action is to sign up directly through the private insurance company. At least, if you're not applying for federal subsidy. The price is the same if you sign up with the company itself, the only difference I've noticed is that you can't apply for the federal subsidy except through the exchange.
