New Philadelphia facility to turn food waste into gas [View all]

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A Philadelphia refinery has announced it is building a new facility to turn food waste into methane gas.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports RNG Energy Solutions said Monday it formed a joint venture with Philadelphia Energy Solutions to build a $120 million digester that will be able to convert more than 1,100 tons of food waste into methane gas.

RNG President James Potter says the project will be able to divert food waste from landfills and reduce the amount of methane gas released into the atmosphere. He says the gas can be used for municipal buses or trucks.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney says the project will bring hundreds of jobs. The project will be built in the city's Point Breeze neighborhood and will take about three years to complete.
