EPA has 'significant concerns' over PennEast project [View all]

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has "significant concerns" about PennEast Pipeline's proposal to build a natural gas pipeline that would wind through Northampton County.

The EPA's chief concerns about the draft environmental impact statement include a lack of analysis on alternative routes, according to a 20-page report the agency released Monday afternoon.

The agency said the report, which was prepared by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, has incomplete information on "a number of important topics." Those topics include: cumulative impacts the proposed project could have on the environment and public health, and impacts on interior forests, aquatic resources and rare, threatened and endangered species.

The report gives the project a grade of "Environmental Objections," meaning the project includes significant environmental impacts that should be avoided to adequately protect the environment.
