'Kinky for Governor' may not be just a flashback [View all]

Kinky Friedman might be the original grassroots candidate.

Six years after he drew more than 500,000 protest votes in a gubernatorial campaign that was part standup comedy routine, part Tea Party rally, the Texas writer and comedian is close to running again in 2014.

This time, he's a Democrat. And an earnest one.

"I'm not just taking a more serious tone -- I am more serious about this," Friedman, 68, said Friday by phone from his Kerr County animal rescue ranch.
