...to meet Pope Francis when the latter visited the US. (There's some thought that he did that in hopes of sabotaging the trip, since it was guaranteed to cause an uproar.)

He offered his resignation from his Nuncio gig when he reached 75 a few months after that, which is customary. And it was accepted.
