And if one lives in a rural area of VA, there is going to be farming and the associated aromas. Simply put, it comes with the terroir.

I would be more concerned about buying a house and property next to Jim-Bob MAGAt who has six broken down cars on the property that they never get to and insists on drunk shooting on the property during the weekends (quite common in rural VA). My wife and I say the two reasons people move out to the country in Virginia is to get away from the noise and mess, or to make noise and a mess.

My advice to your daughter and SIL if they are concerned about being near farming is look for a home in Bridgewater proper or Harrisonburg. Farm aromas shouldn't be an issue in either location.
