May 2020

After four hours of peaceful demonstrations in downtown Seattle, a police car was set on fire near Old Navy on 5th Avenue and Pine Street, and people broke windows at both Old Navy and the nearby Urban Outfitters. The first demonstration and march began around noon Saturday to protest police brutality after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. A second march started in Westlake at 3 p.m.

Around 4:15 p.m., people began setting fires and breaking windows. Mayor Jenny Durkan has issued a 5 p.m. curfew in response to the protests for Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31. An emergency alert was sent out from the city of Seattle asking all residents to disperse from downtown in accordance with the 5 p.m. curfew.

The Seattle Police Department told KIRO Radio that there have been several arrests. The department is also says officers have been injured.

Mayor Durkan will hold a 6pm news conference to address the curfew.
