The terms did not exist, nor was anything approaching such inanity displayed, but the people who set our system up were haunted by the prospect of laws being passed to forgive debts or acquire public lands at no cost by a populace exercising their franchise. This was considered oppression of a minority by democratic rule, with 'minority' in this context meaning wealthy landowners and urban magnates, rather than the modern meaning of a less numerous ethnic or gender identity.
