State officials: Vaccine 'passports' won't be mandated in Washington [View all]

A government-sanctioned vaccination verification system is unlikely to be implemented in Washington, according to state officials.

As states such as California, New York and Hawaii move forward with digital systems used to verify a person has been vaccinated against COVID-19 by authenticating their vaccination status — the practice known colloquially as “vaccine passports” — officials in Washington say such a system won’t be implemented here.

“The governor is not supportive of vaccine passports,” said Tara Lee, a spokesperson for Gov. Jay Inslee. “That is not under consideration.”

As for why, Lee pointed to a lack of guidance from the federal government and said implementing a digital system could also create equity issues.

“Not everyone has a phone or have the means to manage it,” Lee said.
