(51,907 posts)79. Rally Sept. 2 in Seattle for safety at Darigold
Please join us on Wednesday, September 2, at 12 noon for a rally at Judge Charles M. Stokes Overlook Park, right next to Darigold headquarters. Please RSVP here and let us know you will be joining us. http://action.ufw.org/page/m/3bed9e0a/1453614c/44bbacfb/2b6e543e/3794820832/VEsA/
After the rally, a small delegation will deliver to Darigold a petition with more than 30,000 signatures asking the giant corporation to meet about dairy worker safety with the United Farm Workers and worker families that have suffered deaths and injuries. The petitions will be delivered in a casket to represent workers who have lost their lives laboring in Washington state dairies.
Among those there will be the widow of dairy worker Randy Vasquez who died a gruesome death, drowning in a manure pond at a Darigold-member farm. The state Labor and Industries Department investigated Randys death and cited and fined the dairy $6,800 for violations that included failing to post warning signs or fence the lagoon where he died. According to the Yakima Herald, the dairy owner is contesting the citation and penalties.
Randys tragic death earlier this year has shaken up the farm worker community and inspired many to take up the battle to improve dairy workers safety.http://action.ufw.org/page/m/3bed9e0a/1453614c/44bbacfb/2b6e543e/3794820832/VEsA/
Darigold is the largest dairy cooperative based in the Pacific Northwest. It has a responsibility to make sure dairy workers have a safe and healthy work environment. Please join us. Together we can improve the lives of dairy workers.
