(51,907 posts)Dont miss the opportunity to meet author and activist Deepa Iyer as she tours the country with her new book, We Too Sing America: South Asian, Arab, Muslim, and Sikh Immigrants Shape our Multiracial Future.
In We Too Sing America, nationally renowned activist Deepa Iyer catalogs recent racial flash points, from the 2012 massacre at the Sikh gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, to the violent opposition to the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and to the Park 51 Community Center in Lower Manhattan. Iyer explores issues in todays headlines, including xenophobia, Islamophobia, and racial anxiety through accessible language that blends personal narratives and storytelling with critical policy analysis. Iyer explores the role of the state in perpetuating racism through detentions, national registration programs, police profiling, and constant surveillance. Through the perspectives of young South Asian, Muslim, Arab, and Sikh activists who are part of new movements, including those of undocumented youth and Black Lives Matter, the book delves into how our racial identities and solidarities are shifting as demographics change in America.
Join Iyer around the country for book readings and race talks that include the voices of local activists. To set up a workshop or forum around the themes of the book, please email deepa@deepaiyer.com and visit www.deepaiyer.com.
