MICHAEL WOO, 2015 Visionary for Justice Awardee
Michael Woo began organizing rank and file construction workers in the 1970s to ensure good jobs for communities of color. As a union member himself, he has always seen unity among tradespeople as the path to justice and transformation of the industry.
Over the years, he helped found and grow many organizations and organizing efforts, including LELO, FAST Jobs and Got Green. He has led the fight and helped win groundbreaking workforce agreements across the region.
Most recently, he built and led a multi-sector coalition to pass Priority Hire in Seattle City Council this past January. This groundbreaking policy ensures that a high percentage of living wage, union construction jobs will go to workers of color, women and other workers living locally in high poverty zip codes in our city.
