(23,156 posts)its mail voting very well, especially if you must pay for it. Oregon is the other state that does only mail in voting, and not only are the people I know there extremely happy with it, that state has the highest voter participation of any state.
Even if you have only Election Day voting, there will always be a problem if a candidate dies shortly before the election. The one situation in Minnesota shouldn't take away early voting for the rest of us.
There really is a huge problem any more with only election day voting, as I've already mentioned. Usually it shows up as incredibly long lines, especially where the Republicans in charge have seen to it that there are not enough machines in the largely Democratic precincts. Plus, I was an airline ticket agent at Washington National Airport from 1969 to 1979, and election days were always quite strange. The large majority of air travellers (at least back then) were on business, and either they'd go home for election day, then return the day to wherever they spent the week doing work, or simply didn't start their business travel until Tuesday afternoon. Plus, anyone who had any sort of problems getting to their polling place could easily be totally out of luck. Or, those who do odd shift work that might keep them at the workplace the entire time the polls are open. So early voting needs to stay.
