Seattle's St. Mark's Cathedral gives sanctuary to immigrant fighting deportation [View all]
An immigrant, seeking a stay of deportation to Mexico and to stay with his family, has been offered sanctuary at St. Mark's Cathedral and will live on the cathedral campus until his legal status is resolved.
"We say 'Yes' to Jaime," said the Very Rev. Steve Thomason, dean of the Episcopal cathedral, and explained his congregation's stand by paraphrasing a famous phrase of Martin Luther: "Here we stand."
Leaders in the city's faith community used an observance at St. Mark's on May Day in 2017 to proclaim defiance of the Trump Administration's immigration crackdown and to offer sanctuary to those pursued by ICE agents.
St. Mark's walked its talk Friday. welcoming Jaime Rubio Sulfico to a cathedral often nicknamed "The Holy Box," with Thomason saying tenets of the faith "demand the respect of every human being: That is not a partisan statement."
