Pyrite and other sulfide minerals in waste rock produce sulfuric acid and put fish, plants and animals at risk.

Taconite mining is the second largest source of mercury emissions after coal power plants in Lake Superior basin.

Blasting particles less than 1/100th the diameter of a human hair are highly carcinogenic and transmit easily on the wind. The human system cannot block particles of this size.

Miners on the Iron Range have much higher rates of mesothelioma, and higher rates of lung cancer and heart disease than the general Minnesota population.
