...until relatively recently, most of the maternal side relatives in my father's family were born in Canada. Some moved to the US, many did not.
This was never discussed when I was a child. Not sure why. I came across this info while building my family tree on Ancestry.com. My paternal grandmother was the oldest of 3. In most census documents, both her parents and both her siblings are listed as being born in Canada, specifically Ontario, while she is stated to have been born in Michigan. Her father was a farmer, and someone else in the tree said that the family probably moved around at harvest time, going where there was work, and that my great-grandmother must have given birth while the family was temporarily in the States. So, my grandmother likely had dual citizenship. She was born in 1894.
Her brother had at least 10 children, so I must have a boatload of cousins of one degree or another scattered throughout Ontario. I hope I can find some of them.
At any rate. I am excited by the prospect of being a "lost" Canadian, and definitely plan to pursue this.
