if you have a Gmail account ONLY for your friends, family and vital business contacts, then you will probably not get spam. DO NOT EVER GIVE OUT YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS ON AN INTERNET SITE! Including DU. Don't even give it to any companies who don't have a good track record of not selling your email address to others.
I made the mistake years ago of using my main Gmail address for anything and everything, and now I get spam from all corners of god's green earth. I mentioned Gmail because their spam filter is really top notch. You can use any email provider and follow my recommendations and your amount of spam will go down by 99% or more: Outlook.com, Yahoo, etc etc.
I use a completely hidden Gmail account for one of my games, and I never ever get spam on it. So, my strategy works.
