4. I tried to install the 32 bit version earlier

and it was a no go so I downloaded the 64 bit version and will try again. I disabled secure boot but didn't do anything to legacy support. This evening I'll give it another try.

fwiw this laptop came preloaded with windows 10
I've been using Ubuntu since before10.04 and have lost all my windows know how.
