Transferring old computer to new [View all]

see post here ---> http://www.democraticunderground.com/10952771

My intention was to be able to simply connect my old windows vista maching to my new windows 7 using a crossover cable.
When I connected the cable, I got the blue screen of death.

I'm hoping to figure out what I need to do to access my files...I just want to have them connected to I can pop in and out of folders moving stuff in my own time and with more organization....

Any help would be gratefully appreciated...I'm not bad with computers, but I'm not some zen dude either..I got the basics and a little more...but you know...it can get rather confusing at times....thanks
