(30 posts)34. I Disagree
I have been overclocking since I boosted my Celeron 300A from 300Mhz to 450Mhz and I have never damaged a motherboard or processor in all that time and I have lost count of how many different systems I have overclocked.
Is it possible to damage your system? Sure if you have no clue what you are doing. But those same people would probably damage a non-overclocked system also. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Right now my system has a E2180 OC'd from 2Ghz to 2.66Ghz. Does it make a noticeable difference in day to day use? Not much to be honest. But every bit helps when playing games. It's free performance for the taking as long as you know what you are doing.

Overclocking has been, and always will be, a good way to trash a motherboard.

My game playing days are mostly over. I just need a fast compiler. 3.3Ghz 6-core i7 does the trick.
