1. Which version of Firefox?

Version 23 is squirrellier than normal. Version 21 and 22 were a little better. It might help to save your bookmarks -
Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Export Bookmarks to HTML

Then trying to put Firefox back to pristine and reloading the bookmarks. If that does not work, do as I have done and delete Firefox in the Add/Remove in the Control Panel Run a registry cleaner, reboot and download and install a new Firefox. That seems to have helped me.
