that system restore probably does not work in a way that most people expect. It's not a backup/restore system.

System restore restores an old copy of windows' registry. The registry is a database that holds windows settings and program information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Registry

Using system restore after you install a new piece of hardware, then remove it, could fix problems with your machine. System Restore will not uninstall or reinstall software or files.
