When I was a kid, my parents had friends in a town with a big smelly pulp mill. This road near the mill was also near the water and hence considered "nice". EXCEPT - if they left their car outside the garage, the smelly stuff from the mill would take the paint off the car AND etch the windshield. And people lived with it, and joked about "the smell of money." Everyone along the street had a nice car, and a nice garage, and a big piece of land behind the house, right on the water, that was unused and mostly neglected except for cursory mowing.
