My cat is just the opposite. He is just a love ball of fur. Likes to be held all the time. 
I adopted him from the a shelter and has turned out to be a wonderful pet. I spent about 2 hours at the shelter trying to find a nice cat. I was going to try for a young kitten however, the volunteer suggested an older cat since you know what your getting better than a kitten. Everyone likes a kitten but once they become adults you may have a cat that isn't as sociable as you would like. I took his advise and I have a wonderful companion.
