... it's pretty clear that his role in the Senate will be diminished. He can kiss goodbye any committee chairmanship. He'll not be offered any cabinet post. He'll be just another back-bench politician with no influence.

That would be a pretty sad way to go out... snubbed, rejected and marginalized... in the twilight of one's career. I hope that doesn't happen to him, but ultimately, it will be Bernie's choices and decisions that determine how his colleagues view him and treat him. If such a thing does happen, then Bernie will have nobody to blame but himself.
