Clinton actually had a popular vote lead in '08.

I really don't think they can *honestly* have hope. Surely they know it's over. There is no reason they can't still talk about Sander's ideas without denigrating Sec. Clinton. That's how their campaign started. The super delegate argument serves no purpose if Sen. Sanders truly believes in his message and puts it above his ego.
