Bernie Sanders staffers and volunteers urge him to drop out and help Hillary Clinton [View all]

Now that Hillary Clinton has pulled ahead by millions of votes in the democratic primary race and is guaranteed to become the party’s nominee within weeks, various prominent voices on the left have begun calling on her opponent Bernie Sanders to exit the race sooner rather than later so Clinton can turn her full attention toward battling republican nominee Donald Trump. Now a number of Bernie’s own key staffers and volunteers are calling on him to drop out.

The central matter of contention is whether Bernie Sanders will exit the race on June 7th, after the final states cast their primary votes and by which time he will have been mathematically eliminated, or whether he’ll try to keep his defeated campaign nominally intact until the Democratic National Convention in late July. Now some of his own key people are urging him to drop out in June and form his own organization aimed at pushing back against Trump’s extremist rhetoric, which would indirectly help mobilize progressives to vote for Hillary Clinton in the general election.

Regardless of when Sanders drops out of the race, he’ll likely be given some degree of input on the Democratic Party platform, and if he agrees to throw his support behind Hillary Clinton, a prime time keynote speaking slot at the convention. The raises the question of just what he would accomplish by keeping his campaign technically active for an extra month and a half beyond June 7th, and it’s why some of his own people want him to drop out and shift his focus in a more timely fashion.

Meanwhile Sanders has recently begun pivoting his daily stump speech away from attacks on Hillary Clinton, in favor of more prominently attacking Donald Trump instead. It’s not clear how much of this may be a result of Trump’s recent Twitter attacks on Sanders, or how much of it may be that even his own support network is now privately nudging him toward a general election focus.
